Wild Sun Scramble finish
Chris Hofley, Ottawa Sun

A record-tying round on Championship Sunday wasn't enough to clinch the Ottawa Sun Scramble Flagstick open crown for Marc Savard and playing partner Michael Farrugia.

Jeremiah Shields and partner Alex Morin sunk an eagle on the 18th hole, forcing a playoff with former NHLer Savard and Farrugia, whose 14-under on the day tied an Eagle Creek Golf Club record for a championship Sunday.

Shields almost sunk his short chip from the rough on the final playoff hole but Savard saw a short put lip-out on the 10th green and Shields' tap-in putt was enough to clinch the win. More.

Sun Scramble about fun, not just winning
Tim Baines, Ottawa Sun

It’s the ultimate golf competition, bringing together good golfers, bad golfers and some golfers who are more focused on having fun than worrying about their scorecards.

That’s what the Ottawa Sun Scramble has become: A showcase where folks who don’t always score well can win a prize.

There were some good stories on Championship Saturday at Outaouais Golf Club; on any given day, there always are.

There was plenty of drama in the Promedia B Division, with the winning team, Jerry Kreuk and Jason Stewart, prevailing over Rob Kennedy and Marty Belair in a three-hole playoff. Stewart, whose putter was red hot especially in the opening round, sunk a 12-footer to win it after the teams finished at 7-under. More.

Long putt ends longest playoff
By Don Brennan, Ottawa Sun

Sometimes sudden death isn't so sudden.

Like the longest game in NHL history (Montreal-Detroit, 1936, six overtimes) or the longest major league baseball game (Brooklyn-Boston, 1920, 26 innings) or the longest PGA Tour playoff (Cary Middlecoff-Lloyd Mangrum, 1949, 11 holes).

And now the longest Ottawa Sun Scramble playoff ever.

Ian Johnson of Pine View and Joe Veloso of Greyhawk outlasted Greyhawk's Mike Hopkins and Don Robertson in a marathon battle for the final cut spot in the Senior Open at Talon Friday afternoon.

Johnson dropped a 20-footer on the eighth extra hole to send his team into Sunday's championship round at Eagle Creek, still well off the pace set by Dave Saunders and Rob Kimmerly of Prescott. More.

They'll try to unseat living legends Lise Jubinville and Brenda Pilon.

Ranieri and Burnett-Isaacs fired a 7-under at eQuinelle Golf Club to earn a share of the lead with Jubinville and Pilon, the Carleton Golf & Yacht Club dynamic duo they played with in Round 1 Wednesday. More.

Hot putter for city's water boy
By Don Brennan, Ottawa Sun

Perhaps it was something in the water that transformed Jason Stewart into a master with the flat blade.

"What did it for us was Jason's putting," said Jerry Kreuk -- his partner in the B Division Division of the Ottawa Sun Scramble -- after the pair scorched tough and beautiful Le Sorcier with an 8-under score 63 Wednesday. "I've played golf with Jason for the last five or six years now, and he's not known as a putter. Today was unbelievable how well he was putting. It was phenomenal."

Kreuk, 56, and Stewart, 27, work together for the City of Ottawa. Their jobs?

"We're in charge of the water system for the whole city," said Kreuk.

They were the bosses of the moss in recording eight birdies and no bogeys for a one-stroke lead over Kraig De la Salle and Spawn Gusdal. Four strokes off the pace at 4-under heading into Championship Saturday at Outaouais will be six groups. More.

Handicap? It's 20
Prosthetic leg doesn't keep Surla from enjoying golf

Tim Baines, Ottawa Sun

Thirty-two years ago, Vinko Surla, living in Bosnia, was told he had a 1-in-1,000 chance of living.

Gangrene had gotten into his left leg and cancer was invading his lungs. He was just 18.

"I was fighting for my life," he said. "The doctor told me I had three months to live, so I started living a full life, for what I had left. I tried to live those three months to the most. I enjoyed the nightlife ... and then somehow, the cancer stopped growing in my lungs. I had heard of people who sold the house and travelled around the world, then they became healthy."

Because of the gangrene, doctors amputated the leg. More.

B Division Division's first round set for Le Sorcier Golf Club
By Ron Patey

The question “To be or not to be on the way to becoming champs of the Ottawa Sun Scramble’s B Division Division?” gets answered tomorrow at Le Sorcier Golf Club.

The 18 teams from a field of 70 two-person squads that come up with the right reply by going lower than most in round one will book berths to compete in round two on Championship Saturday (Aug. 23) at Outaouais Golf Club. More.

Ottawa Sun

The Round 1 leaders in the Flashpoint D division of the Ottawa Sun Scramble had to know it was coming.

As they relished their 1-under score at Pineview Monday, Anand Jahagirdar and Chris Heywood were taunted by friends who accused them of being “sandbaggers.”

And what did they think about that?

“Sore losers,” said Heywood.

“Jealous jerks,” replied Jahagirdar.

Sitting two shots back after a plus-1 finish are Andrew Lennon and his brother-in-law Cory Chuchryk. The 10 teams (of 36 that competed) to make the cut of plus-8 will tee it up for the championship Saturday at Outaouis.

Jahagirdar started golfing 2 1/2 years ago while Heywood has played since he was 13. Both are 33 years old. More.

Annual Sun Scramble swings into action
Tim Baines, Ottawa Sun

Claude Giroux has proven he's one of the NHL's top players, an elite-level superstar.

He's hoping to pull some of that elite out of his golf bag and into the thick of competition Friday in the GolfWorks A event at Talon at GreyHawk, one of the major events in the week-long Ottawa Sun Scramble, the little tournament that could -- the annual grand get together of everybody, from scratch golfers to hackers and everything in between.

So much has happened, the growth has been phenomenal since the tournament began in 2005 with less than a hundred golfers, two divisions playing on one course.

What a week it promises to be. Just when we thought that summer was gone and October had arrived, the weather forecast is calling for sun, sun and more sun -- all week. Sun Scramble, indeed. Full Story.

Ottawa Sun Scramble kicks off in fitting style
By Don Brennan, Ottawa Sun

Ottawa Sun Scramble week kicked off in fitting fashion Friday at Falcon Ridge Golf Course -- a pair of Sun staffers won the Regimbal Cup, and they were roundly chirped after doing so.

The team of Mark Williamson (marketing and promotions co-ordinator) and George Norlock (circulation manager) posted a 4-under 68 to claim the media challenge by one shot over former Sun employees Chris Stevenson and Mike Therien, who Las Vegas oddsmakers had liked going into the event. Full story.

Perfect weather, sweet deals and a little bit of fun makes for a great day at the Ottawa/Gatineau Golf Expo

By Tim Baines, Ottawa Sun

With the sun shining, with the number on the thermometer starting to creep up, Ottawa golfers got an early feel for the local golf season on Saturday.

The annual Ottawa/Gatineau Golf Expo, at the Ernst and Young Centre, had a steady flow of golfers.

There was golf instruction, a demo range where golfers could hit the newest in equipment, plenty of clothing available at clearance prices, golf destinations galore, interactive zones for kids. It's the total package -- one-stop shopping -- that carries on Sunday -- from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Full Story.

Sun Scramble pre-registration open
Aedan Helmer

On your mark. Get set. Scramble!

It's that time of year again, where the capital's crack golfers who made the cut at last year's Ottawa Sun Scramble are invited to pre-register for this year's event.

Nine region courses host tournament play as qualifiers begin Aug. 7 and the main event -- now in it's 10th year -- goes with Championship Saturday Aug. 23 at Outaouais and Championship Sunday Aug. 24 at Eagle Creek. Full story.

February 3, 2014 (News Release)

Attention Sports Editors – For Immediate Release

2014 Ottawa Sun Scramble now open for registration, celebrating 10-years of competition
11 city championships at nine courses from Rockland to Renfrew for golfers of all skill levels

February 3, 2014 – Ottawa, Ontario. Players who made the cut in 2013 are invited to pre-register now since general registration opens March 1st, and spots are expected to fill up quickly.

“This tournament continues to grow each year,” said Jamie Ryan, tournament director and president of Executive Golf, the organizing body. “We started with 140 players in two divisions in 2005 and are shooting for 1,000 golfers in 11 divisions this year.”

The Ottawa Sun Scramble is a two-person scramble format where both players make a shot and choose the better of the two, from tee to green. This format allows golfers to post much lower scores than they could on their own, and the best score in 2013 was twenty-under par, set by Flagstick Open division champions Chris McCuaig and Ben Bell who beat Joe Dubinski and James Paterson in a playoff. The lowest two-round score ever posted in the tournament’s history was twenty-six under in 2011 when Curtis Dancy and Robert Mustard ended a six-year reign for Allen McGee and Kyle Koski.

“It’s great to see this region wide championship reach its tenth anniversary,” said Scott MacLeod, editorial director for Flagstick Golf Magazine. “The tournament has filled a need for a team championship in the National Capital Region and I’ve enjoyed playing in it several times. Executive Golf has done a great job building and growing the tournament into a fixture on the local golf calendar. It seems more people want to play in it every year.”

While the Flagstick Open, Ladies Open, Senior Open and Junior Open divisions are for the region’s top players, including professionals, the tournament is set up to welcome all calibers of golfers, including those who struggle to break 100, as with the Flashpoint D division.

This year’s event begins with the east-end qualifier at Hammond Golf Club on August 7, followed by the central qualifier at Falcon Ridge as part of Royal Oak Kick-Off Day on August 8 where local media personalities compete for the Régimbal Cup. Members of the public are invited to attend kick-off day to participate in various golf activities, including the Michelob Ultra $1,000,000 Ace, where 10 lucky people will have a chance to shoot for the loot.

Royal Oak Kick-Off Day is the official launch of the Ottawa Sun Scramble and features manufacturer equipment demos, the Make-A-Wish $5,000 putt, a long drive contest, a Slammer Tour match-play event and complimentary hors d’oeuvres in the clubhouse.

“I can’t believe it’s been 10 years already,” said event organizer and PGA of Canada professional Andy Rajhathy. “Our mission at Executive Golf is to grow the game across all age groups and skill-levels and we’re absolutely certain that this scramble format is key to that success. Not only do the less experienced players get to post low scores for their caliber, but as we’ve seen, the top golfers get to go super low, and this provides an environment for all types of golfers to compete with comfort.”

According to six-time champion, Allen McGee, his favourite success to date was making the cut in 2013 with his 13-year old son, Hunter. “Owning the field for a few years with Kyle Koski was certainly memorable, but just making the cut last year was a feat we’ll never forget, especially considering we competed with the likes of Kevin Haime, Joe Dubinski, Julian James, Bill Minkhorst and other pros.”

“We want to change the belief that competition is only for great players,” said Rajhathy. “We want ladies, juniors and higher-handicappers to give it a try and to experience the thrill of playing in a real tournament. If they mess up a shot, the partner has a chance to save the team. It really is a ton of fun.”

Claude Giroux set to compete in Sun Scramble after signing big contract with Philadelphia Flyers
Tim Baines, Ottawa Sun

For many years, Claude Giroux has been beating the odds.

Like when his family moved to Ottawa from Hearst in the summer of 2002. He spoke very little English, a small French kid thrown into what for him seemed like a whole new universe.

Like when he went unchosen in the 2004 and 2005 OHL drafts despite lighting it up with the Cumberland Barons, then the Grads.

Like Flyers GM Bobby Clarke forgetting his name when Philadelphia drafted him 22nd overall in 2006.

What Giroux has done on the ice is amazing. He's gone from being a sometimes-floater to an NHLer who plays bigger than his advertised 5-foot-11, 180-pound body frame. He's got tenacity, intensity and plenty of other intangibles that landed him the gig as Philly's captain. He's also got the cojones to engage in some epic battles with His Highness, Sidney Crosby -- the two could soon be Team Canada teammates at the 2014 Winter Olympics.

With the sun hiding behind a couple of clouds, Giroux, using one of Bubba Watson's pink Ping G25 drivers, launches a 330-yard drive from the 12th hole blue teebox at Predator at GreyHawk Golf Club, one of the property's two wonderful layouts. Full story.

Regimbal Cup Finds New Home
Bruce Garrioch, Ottawa Sun

The coveted Regimbal Cup may have found a home.

After all, Mark Papousek and Bob Radmore are starting to make a habit of this.

The legendary morning show host at Country 101.1 and Radmore — the promotions director at Rogers Radio Ottawa — became the first two-time champions of the Regimbal Media Challenge Friday with a victory at Falcon Ridge.

After letting a three-stroke lead slip away after nine holes, Papousek and Radmore, who won the title in 2011, were forced to work overtime before knocking off Eric The Intern from Chez 106 and partner Daryl Pickering in a playoff. Full Story...

Radmore & Papousek Win Their 2nd Regimbal Cup at Sun Scramble

August 3, 2012 -- Ottawa. The conditions were incredibly tough, with howling winds and rain-dampened turf, but Bob Radmore of Chez 106 and Mark Papousek of Country 101 managed to win their second title in the Ottawa Sun Scramble Regimbal Media Challenge on Friday at Falcon Ridge. It took two playoff holes in the two-person scramble format, but a par on #2 was good enough to edge out Chez 106's Eric The Intern and Daryl Pickering after both teams finished 18-holes at even par. The cup was previously won by Radmore and Papousek in 2011 with two-under par, and Le Droit's Martin Comtois and Jonathan Blouin claimed it in 2012 with a one-under par score.

East-End Qualifier at Hammond (Rained Out)

Unfortunately after the first few groups teed off and made it to hole #3 today at Hammond, the expected rain came and came hard for over an hour. While the rain started to calm after one hour the course was extremely wet. The committee decided at 12:30pm the qualifier would be cancelled due to unplayability of the golf course.

As per the outlined rules of competition, if the round is cancelled the committee reverts to 2012 placing. In some cases there were teams in the qualifier that didn't play last year - we then do a random draw to allocate the qualifier spots.

A big thanks to Hammond for their efforts on the golf course. It is in excellent shape.

For teams that did not qualify at Hammond today, you may opt into the Central Qualifier tomorrow at Falcon Ridge (11am shotgun), or the West-End qualifier on Saturday at Eagle Creek (1:30 - 3:30pm tee times). Please do so before 8pm this evening by sending a note to info@clubeg.ca. Please let us know if you have any questions.

Ottawa Sun Scramble Competitors,

We're heading into our ninth year of competition. Over the years we have seen many teams that are highly skilled yet miss the cut, and many teams who were deemed underdogs play very well. In a two-person scramble the compatibility between partners can have more of an effect on your final score than the level of skill of your team.

There are a few options for you and your partner to get some practice in, playing the two-person scramble format. Here are some options:

  1. Ottawa Sun Scramble Practice Extravaganza
July 28th at Dragonfly Golf Links. The day includes golf, cart, range, chicken and rib dinner and prizes.

  2. Three qualifiers
    August 1st @ Hammond, August 2nd @ Falcon Ridge and/or August 3rd @ Eagle Creek.

  3. Call up a course!

Full information on these three options can be found by clicking here:

Registration for the 2013 Ottawa Sun Scramble is ready to go!

Players who made the cut last year in the Ottawa-Gatineau region’s largest golf tournament are able to pre-register starting Feb. 15 and golfers of all calibres can sign up to compete in 11 divisions beginning March 1.

“The Ottawa Sun Scramble continues to grow and I expect this year to be no different,” said Andy Rajhathy, vice-president of Executive Golf, the organization that puts together and run the event. “We've refined our qualifying process and transparency with regards to divisional eligibility so this year there should be some excellent competition in every division. The schedule of events remains the same and all courses from last year are on board again.”

The Flagstick Open City Championship division has become a premier test for some of the best players in the region and should a professional win this year’s event, he will pocket more cash.

If a professional wins he’ll bank $1,000 and there’s $500 in prize money for the top pro (a player can’t win both). A pro finishing second gets $300 and a third-place finish earns $100.

“The Flagstick Open City Championship is establishing a solid footprint in the region,” said Rajhathy. “Partnerships with our sponsors such as Flagstick, GolfWorks, Regimbal, Absolute Comedy, Flashpoint Photo Booth, Labatt and Royal Oak really make this tournament a highlight on local golfers' calendars.”

The Ladies Open prize money for a professional comes in at $300 for first place and $150 for the runner-up.

One of the keys to the ongoing success of the Ottawa Sun Scramble is that it’s a tournament for men and women players of all skill levels.

“The organization and running of each division is the same,” Rajhathy said. “The competition is keen and when it’s over the winners can be proud to be city champions.”

The Ottawa Sun is back as title sponsor for the event’s ninth year and promises to come through with tee-to-green reports from all of the courses.

"We have had a lot of change in our business and our industry in the last year, but one thing that doesn't change is the Sun's commitment to the tournament as the title sponsor,” said Mike Therien of Sun Media. “We look forward to the best Sun Scramble yet, with wall-to-wall coverage of all categories in our print newspapers and online for golf fans across the region."

Ottawa Sun Scramble registration starts today
Ron Patey, Ottawa Golf Examiner

Organizers of the Ottawa Sun Scramble City Championship Week are primed and ready to sign up players beginning today for what promises to be the event’s largest edition ever.

“Plans are coming together nicely for this year’s Ottawa Sun Scramble,” said Andy Rajhathy, vice-president of Executive Golf, the group that puts together the huge tournament. “With two new divisions added - the GolfWorks A and a D division for those who shoot over 100 - we are expecting 700 competitors to tee it up.”

Courses and dates announced for 2012 Scramble – Ottawa-Gatineau’s largest golf tournament
11 city championships at nine courses over seven days in August

January 24, 2012 – Ottawa, Ontario. The biggest golf event in the region, Ottawa Sun Scramble City Championship Week, has grown from just two single-round events in 2005 to a major weeklong festival of golf with an expected 700 competitors in 11 partner events targeting every type of golfer, from beginner to professional.

Direct tournament registration opens March 1, 2012; however, competitors who made the cut in 2011 (in any division) can register as of today at ottawasunscramble.com.

The 2012 tournament offers two new classes at both ends of the spectrum: the GolfWorks A and D Division City Championships. “The Ottawa-Gatineau golf market is huge”, said tournament director and president of Executive Golf, Jamie Ryan. “We want to give everyone an opportunity to experience competition at their own level and that’s why we continue to refine the divisions, to keep it as competitive as possible. Everyone who enters will have a chance to win their division”.

The 2011 championships saw a major upset when after winning six straight Open titles, Allen McGee and Kyle Koski finally met their match with newcomers Curtis Dancy and Robert Mustard who won by four strokes after round two at Eagle Creek. 2012 promises to be tense as both teams intend to return.

“Robert and I will most definitely be back to defend the title,” said Dancy. “Last year was our first time in the tournament and we had an absolute blast. Our goal is to better our winning score. It seems like a longshot as we both played near perfect golf, but it's another year and anything can happen.”

McGee was more to the point, and slightly less humble: “We will be there and we will not lose!”

Ryan explained the decision for splitting up the upper field into Open and A divisions: “We want all divisions to be as competitive as possible and since we’re seeing more professionals enter the tournament, the need to create another class has become apparent. The Flagstick Open is now only for pros and amateurs with handicap factors of 3.9 or less or scoring averages of 77 or less. The new GolfWorks A Division is for amateurs with handicap factors between 4.0 and 9.9 or scoring averages between 78 and 84.”

“We are excited about becoming the title sponsor of the Open Division,” said Jeff Bauder, president and publisher of Flagstick Golf Magazine. “It’s no secret that this has become one of the most talked about events on the calendar and the Open Division delivers a lot of drama. Flagstick will be able to add even more hype through our many promotional avenues and we can't wait to help elevate this event to an even higher level through this new partnership.”

The rationale for a D Division (100+ scoring average) has also become clear, especially considering the vast majority of public golfers are not A or even B-classers. “Competition is relative. All competitors now have a legitimate chance to win their division,” said Ryan.

The tournament was first launched in 2005 with an Open and Senior event at Eagle Creek Golf Club, but now offers 10 two-round partner divisions plus the Régimbal Media Challenge and three qualifying events.

The event is conducted by local golf promotion company, Executive Golf (clubeg.ca), and is a scramble format where both players take a shot and the best of the two is used, from the tee box, on the fairway, in the rough, in bunkers, hazards and on the green.

All divisions are two-round events with a cut after the first (excluding the Media Challenge) and teams that make the cut play for their respective city title on either Championship Saturday at Club de Golf Outaouais (B Division, Absolute Comedy C, D and Ladies C) or Championship Sunday at Eagle Creek Golf Club (Flagstick Open, Ladies, Ladies B, Senior, Junior Open and the GolfWorks A). Executive Golf provides over $30,000 in EG Memberships (any competitor who makes the cut receives a $285 membership to Executive Golf), along with more than $15,000 in sponsor prizing for the top finishers and contest winners. There are cash prizes for the top professionals.

Also returning for 2012 is the “Bud Light Million Dollar Ace” where competitors and members of the public have a chance to be drawn to shoot for the loot during Royal Oak Kick-Off Day at Falcon Ridge Golf Course on August 3rd. This pre-tournament event includes a skills and tricks clinic, Slammer Tour match-play events, the Media Challenge, an outdoor golf show and a host of contests and other events. Kick-Off Day is free for the public to attend.

The tournament organizers are pleased to welcome the following new courses and sponsors to 2012 Ottawa Sun Scramble City Championship Week: eQuinelle Golf Club, Dragonfly Golf Links, Pine View, GolfWorks Canada, Flagstick Golf Magazine and Absolute Comedy.

The Regimbal Cup has a new home.

Chance to Scramble for a million
By Don Brennan, Ottawa Sun

Local golf’s version of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire will once again help get the ball rolling for Ottawa Sun Scramble City Championship Week.

Nine people who are 19 and over — at least three of whom will be selected from the general public admitted free to the event — will get a chance to strike it rich by acing a 165-yard hole at Falcon Ridge Aug. 5.

If lightning hits more than once, then there will be multiple millionaires going home from the course. And while no winner has claimed the jackpot in six years, there has been a close call.

“In the second year we had it at Eagle Creek, and a lady who won her spot through the Sun had no experience,” remembered tournament director Karl Parks. “She took a one-hour lesson from (then-head pro) Darryl Lepage, then hit a shot that missed the pin by six inches, it rolled two feet past the cup. That’s the closest we’ve had.”

A putting contest ($5 donation to Make-A-Wish for a ticket in a draw that gives the winner a 65-foot shot at $5,000), discounted buckets of balls (any size for a $2 donation), a chipping contest and a ‘Trick Shot And Skills Clinic’ put on by the CPGA’s Colin Orr will also be part of the Royal Oak Kick-Off Day at Falcon Ridge, as will a Tommy & Lefebvre “9 and Dine,” plus morning and afternoon Slammer Tour Events sandwiched around the Regimbal Media Challenge.

Contenders take aim at Sun Scramble kings
By DON BRENNAN, Ottawa Sun

Not even the best players or most dominant teams win all the time.

Even Allen McGee and Kyle Koski can be beaten — by others, or by odds.

McGee and Koski will be shooting for their sixth straight title in the Men’s Open division at the sixth annual Ottawa Sun Scramble next month.

In three of their five championships, the margin of victory has been by one shot. In the other two, it’s been two shots. As good as they are, they can’t outrun the field, or fate, forever.

“You have to wonder how many years in a row Koski and McGee can go before they miss a few putts,” said Ottawa pro Kevin Haime. “What they’ve done is unbelievable. Each year, they’ve been 10-or-11-under both days. It’s incredible.”

Indeed. A dream team of Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson might not meet their kind of consistency in a two-man scramble.

Last year, McGee and Koskie finished the two-day tournament at 20-under, the same score they had in winning three years ago. In 2008, they were 19-under. And in the first two years, they won with 22-under totals.

You don’t go that low, year after year, without at least a little luck on your side. At the same time, what is it they say you have to be, to be lucky?

“Those guys are bloody good,” said Haime.

Ah yes, that’s it.

March 24, 2010 (News Release)

Executive Golf announces courses and dates for Ottawa-Gatineau’s largest golf tournament
Eight events at seven courses

March 24, 2010 – Ottawa, Ontario. The decision has been made: a new Open ‘C’ division has been added to the week-long schedule for Ottawa Sun Scramble City Championship Week. Now with eight divisions (Open, Open B, Open C, Ladies Open, Ladies B, Senior, Junior and the Media Challenge), tournament director Karl Parks expects 650 competitors for this year’s tournament.

Kyle Koski & Allen McGee are expected to return to shoot for their 6th straight title in the Open division. Also of note, Lise Jubinville & Brenda Pilon claimed their 3rd straight title in 2009 with an impressive 15-under par in the Ladies Open – but they only won by a hair as Julie Cashaback & Luci Leblanc finished just one stroke back at 14-under. According to Karl Parks, “we’ve seen the level of competition rise steadily, each year, and this is what keeps prompting us to add new divisions.”

The tournament was first launched in 2005 with an Open and Senior event at Eagle Creek Golf Club.

“With the new Open C division”, says Parks, “the Sun Scramble now accommodates every type of golfer, as long as they can break 100”.

The tournament is conducted by local golf promotion company, Executive Golf (clubeg.ca), and is a scramble format where both players take a shot and the best one is used. “This is a highly-competitive event,” said Jamie Ryan, president of Executive Golf, “and not like your standard corporate or charity scramble where the emphasis is on fun. The best players in each division should in fact win their respective titles and we were thrilled to see Kyle and Allen complete their Drive for Five in 2009. These two golfers know each other’s game so well and ham and egg it like no other team.”

According to Parks, there are other teams who, after having competed together for a few years now, are more aware of the value of strategy in a competitive scramble, so Koski & McGee’s sixth victory is far from assured. “I wouldn’t be surprised to see new champions this year,” he said.

The tournament is a two-round event for each division (excluding the Media Challenge) with a cut after round one. Teams that make the cut play for their respective city title on either Championship Saturday at Club de Golf Outaouais (Open B, Open C and Ladies B), or Championship Sunday at Eagle Creek Golf Club (Open, Ladies Open, Senior and Junior). Executive Golf provides over $30,000 in EG Memberships, along with more than $15,000 in sponsor prizing for the top finishers and contest winners.

The famous “Coors Light Million Dollar Ace”, a contest where eight shooters have a chance to win a million dollars, takes place during Kick-Off Day at Falcon Ridge Golf Course on August 5th, 2010. This pre-tournament event includes a skills clinic, a Slammer Tour match-play event, the Sun Scramble Media Challenge, other contests and refreshments. Kick-Off Day is open to the public and free to attend.
